Planning a road trip in the US: Are you properly insured?

Spring is sprung, the border has finally reopened, and you're dreaming of basking on the beaches of Ogunquit or other Maine beauty spots. With the right insurance, you can leave without a care in the world. Here’s some good advice for a worry-free trip.

Before you head off

Are facemasks mandatory? Vaccine passport? Antigen test? Health restrictions may vary from week to week, and from state to state. Check the public health websites of the states you plan to travel through as well as Canadian government notices.

Also make sure to have all necessary documents for each traveler on hand, including up-to-date health insurance, passports, driver's licenses and proof of auto insurance. With Intact Insurance’s smartphone app, you can readily access your digital proof of insurance, roadside assistance and more.

Auto insurance

Most auto insurance policies cover travel to the States, but may be subject to some restrictions. For example, the duration of coverage may be limited to a certain number of months. Even if your policy doesn’t specify the maximum period, claims for stays longer than six months are assessed on an individual basis.

It isn’t necessary to notify your insurance broker every time you leave Quebec, but you should mention that your vehicle will sometimes be used outside the province. If in doubt, take the time to review your contract before leaving, or contact your broker.

Travel insurance

Something as simple as a broken arm can cost tens of thousands of dollars south of the border, and the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) only covers a portion of hospital costs outside Canada. That's why it's important to have the right travel insurance.

Travel insurance also protects you against other unforeseen events like trip cancellation or lost baggage. Your insurance broker can advise you on which coverage is best for your family.

Roadside assistance

A tire blows out on the road to Ogunquit? No worries, thanks to Intact Insurance's roadside assistance program*. Whether you’re driving a car or an RV, this service is available 24/7 in both Canada and the US. It includes tire/wheel changes, gas delivery, vehicle towing, battery boost and door unlocking.

In the event of an accident in the United States

If you’re injured in a vehicle accident in the US, the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) may compensate you, whether you’re at fault or not. However, the SAAQ doesn’t offer any compensation for injuries to another person or for property damage. That’s why it’s sensible to purchase at least $2 million in liability insurance when driving outside Canada.

In the event of a collision, note the details of the other party and any witnesses, as well as the accident circumstances. Also take pictures of the scene and the vehicles involved.

With a little foresight, you can head off with peace of mind. Contact us to get a quote for your car or RV insurance, or, if you’re already with us, contact your insurance broker for any questions about your coverage in the States. Bon voyage!
